Chambers of Commerce

One of the best places to start when researching the nuances of any community is to go to the chamber of commerce. There you will find the resources for businesses, entertainment and events that make that community unique. Here are the links to the chamber websites for each county we serve in the Low Country:

Berkeley County    Charleston County    Dorchester County

Schools

There is no issue more important to a family than making sure the schools are a fit for their needs. So where to start? Absolutely talk to people in the community. Perhaps schedule a visit with the principal or the district administrator or attend a school board meeting. Here is information on public and private schools for each district in our local area:

Berkeley Schools    Charleston Schools    Dorchester Schools

Newspapers

Another great way to learn about the area is to read about the local happenings in the area publications. The Charleston Post and Courier is located in downtown Charleston and covers daily news around Charleston. The paper's history goes as far back as 1803.

The Moultrie News has been in production since 1964 and covers news in Mount Pleasant.

A great source for events and entertainment news is the Charleston City Paper. Here you will find updates on food and drink, music and clubs, news and opinion, arts and movies, and calendar and scene.

Find more links to local news publications here.

County Government

While the townships are mostly self-governed, the county government oversees much of the day-to-day aspects such as zoning, property taxes, recreation, etc. There is a booklet published with the contact information for the elected township and county official, as well as the county and town offices, that is quite handy.

Here are the links for Berkeley County, Charleston County, and Dorchester County government sites.
